Kaffarah for Breaking a Fast Intentionally in Ramadan

  1. £300 – for Each Fast Broken Donate Now

If someone intentionally breaks their fast in Ramadan without a valid excuse (such as illness, travel, or menstruation), they must perform Kaffarah (expiation) in addition to making up (Qada) the missed fast.

Conditions for Kaffarah

Kaffarah applies when a person deliberately breaks their fast by: Eating or drinking intentionally or Engaging in marital relations during fasting hours. It does not apply if the fast is broken due to forgetfulness, mistake, or coercion.

How to Expiate (Kaffarah) for Breaking the Fast?

A person must choose one of the following:

  • Fasting for 60 Consecutive Days
    • If they miss a single day, they must restart the 60 days unless they have a valid excuse. OR
  • Feeding 60 Poor People
    • This involves providing each person with a full meal (or the equivalent cost of food).
    • The food should be staple items such as wheat, rice, or dates.

If a person is unable to fast for 60 days due to health reasons, they must feed 60 needy people. The minimum price to feed 60 people is £300.

Qada (Make-Up Fast) in Addition to Kaffarah

Besides Kaffarah, the person must also make up the missed fast (Qada) by fasting a day for each day they broke.

Example Scenarios

✅ If a person eats intentionally during Ramadan: They must fast for 60 days or feed 60 poor people and make up for the missed fast.
✅ If someone engages in marital relations while fasting: They must perform Kaffarah and make up the fast.
✅ If a person breaks the fast due to illness or travel: No Kaffarah is needed, only Qada after Ramadan.
